Thank you for articulating the loss.

We are ALL self made. And we did it with the “tools” in our possession. You are 100% correct, it is stuff but it is the stuff that makes each one of us. DAMN IT, it was YOUR stuff.

Almost all of your content has made me think. This one has me sobbing for your loss.

Stay strong and remember all of your neighbors are in our prayers

Hard to believe the staggering loss of possessions by so many and of course the few that lost their lives ... My sense is that you have internal fortitude to weather this storm, one step at a time. Wishing you the best in getting through this mess. High up on the list of necessities should be stout hammer, I'm sure it will be just a small piece to help release excess energy and build something....anythingj....

Dave, so much of your essay resonates: yesterday, the neighbors house across the street caught fire. It took almost four hours to put it out, but the thinking was that it was still salvageable. Unfortunately, over the course of the night, burning embers restarted the fire. Despite the fire department’s repeated efforts, this second time, the roof caught fire and the entire house collapsed. I can’t help but think that a mere 24 hours ago, the family was cozy and surrounded by their belongings. Right now, they have nothing. Everything is gone. I can’t fathom such a loss, yet in California, tens of thousands of families are experiencing the same desolation. So are you. I grieve for your loss, for your neighbors, and for my neighbors. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Even with the media coverage and these descriptions, each and every detail of the widespread destruction is beyond imagination. Wishing comfort, strength and perseverance to Dave and those affected by the tragic losses.

The loss is un fathomable, even if it is just ‘things,’ those things define us, just as the place we call home defines us. Experiences define us too; this is an extraordinary experience that many will never know. Godspeed on this painful, difficult journey. I always wonder how people reinstate themselves after so much destruction— Hiroshima— Nagasaki— yet they do.

About half-way through the read I began to think to myself, is this what does him in? The narrative sure had that vibe at that point. I stopped and imagined some of the struggles Dave has shared about his life, yet gathered himself to move beyond those adversities. I've tried to recall a scene from a movie or book where the protagonist is nearly overwhelmed, and on the brink of losing all, barely clamors and struggles to a new place in life informed by those experiences. You probably have one in mind. With this read, for me, It's Dave. We're cheering for you, Dave.

I have nothing to say that can help. I'm at a loss for words, but you know we care, and we'll continue to help.
